Monday 24 May · 2021 18:30-20:30 CEST

Dear AScUS participants,

Time has arrived and we hold the first pre-conference activity of our workshop “Let's discover what is interdisciplinarity through artistic representation !

You can join the pre-conference session today using the following link. (We recommend using Google Chrome for a better performance)

The workshop consists of a role play where the purpose is to bring together researchers from different communities and make them reflect on a specific socio-technical system: the tomato ! Why reflecting on research on tomato? To get the answer, we invite you to a pre-conference!

During the pre-conference we will present the workshop and it will be a good opportunity to get to know each other through a playful and artistic way, and to get familiar with the digital tools we will use (Miro Board and Blackboard).

Attention : during the conference, each of our discussion sessions can only be opened to 8 persons maximum. So we will send a confirmation message to the 8 first participants registered to each workshop. Again, to accommodate the different time zones, we propose 3 sessions during the conference. You can find the full schedule here.

We hope that all the participants will be willing to play our game will be able to do it! You can register from now at this link :

Feel free to contact us for any question!

Looking forward to meeting you later today :)

Pre-conference Session - - Urban Metabolism and the Future of Mobility

Tuesday 25 May · 2021 14:30-16:30 CEST

Since we have only a limited amount of time during the conference, part of the workshop will take place as pre-conference activity. In fact, the pre-conference activity might be one of the most exiting parts of this discussion session: We will start building the different future scenarios as basis for our backcasting approach during the conference. It will consist of two parts:

  • a joint brainstorming for realizing a task and problem analysis that will guide the workshop activities, and
  • a creative group work for developing and framing the future scenario that will be the starting point of the backcasting exercise we will do during the conference.

So, take a break from your working routine and participate in building the vision of future mobility in the city of your choice. Depending on the number of participants we will split up into groups and develop different visions, each of them with an existing city of your choice as starting point. The pre-conference session will take place one week before at the same time as the actual conference session on 25th of May from 14:30 to 16:30h CEST (we might end a little earlier). For other time zones, check the conference schedule.

Make sure you do not miss this particularly creative part of the workshop and to participate in setting the scene for the discussion session on June 2nd!

If you have any questions, please post them in the Forum, or write an e-mail.

See you on May 25th!

Pre-conference Session - - Circularity: Just Science Fiction?

Wednesday 26 May · 2021 17:00-19:00 CEST

We are the organisers of “Circularity: just science fiction? ”, a discussion session where we ask you to use the best of your imagination to create a science fiction narrative. We will take you into a world where the circular economy has become the mainstream economic paradigm. Based on that, you can help us imagine how life looks and feels under that future reality. We use the science-fiction prototyping methodology to run the workshop as it develops our capacity for dealing with the unknown and unpredictable. Come and join us in turning the unknown into a resource for strategic planning.

To get to meet each other before the conference, we invite you to join our pre-conference session. There, we propose to get you familiarised with the methodology and the concepts we all will be using during the discussion session at the conference. This event will happen on the 26th of May from 17h to 19h CEST. So, prepare to get a beer/glass of wine/cup of tea or coffee or just a glass of water, and join what will be a colourful conversation.

Pre-conference Session - - Urban Sustainability Curriculum for Collaborative e-learning MOOC

Thursday 27 May · 2021 15:00-16:00 CEST

We invite you to join and contribute to the pre-conference activity to co-create the Urban Sustainability MOOC. As the next generation of engineers must be skilled in urban sustainability, there is a need to establish a curriculum for a MOOC that introduces the complexities in navigating the interconnections in social-ecological-technical systems.

In the pre-conference activity on May 27th, 3 to 4 pm CEST, we will begin by briefly discussing our vision for the MOOC and experiences in megacities from the global south, where the sustainability challenges are most evident and concerning. Next, we will organize a discussion on the pros and cons of different approaches to the curriculum and the structure of the MOOC, and whether the course content should be recorded or interactive.

We hope that this pre-conference session will help scope out the collaborative e-learning course that democratizes fundamental theoretical urban sustainability knowledge and shares successful infrastructure systems case studies from cities worldwide.

If you wish to participate in our pre-conference activity and discussion session during AScUS 2021, please register. The link to the meeting will be available on the AScUS (un)conference website. You can also participate in the forum by clicking here. Please ask questions, make suggestions, and give us feedback.

We will hold this event on May 27th from 3 to 4 pm CEST to accommodate other time zones. You can check the schedule here.

We hope to see you all there on 27th May!

If you have any questions, you can contact any of us via email (see the emails below please).
